Gestalt Therapy

What’s it all about ?

Gestalt therapy is a humanistic, relational form of psychotherapy that helps people explore their difficulties by focusing on their thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. The emphasis in Gestalt therapy is on the "how" we act in our environment, rather than the "why". While personal history plays a role in shaping who we are, Gestalt therapy maintains that the past does not define us. This approach uses practical tools to strengthen our ability to choose and act, leading to greater well-being and fulfilment. It is a valuable resource for addressing both past and present challenges.

Developed in the 1950s, Gestalt therapy is a holistic therapy, considering the whole person — including physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual dimensions.

The Therapeutic Relationship

Unlike other approaches where the therapist may remain distant, Gestalt therapy emphasises the importance of an authentic, human relationship between therapist and client. By being fully present and engaged, the therapist acts as a mirror, providing a space for experimentation, awareness, and adjustment. This fosters a deeper understanding of oneself and others, supporting healing and personal growth.

Here and now

The concept of the "here and now" focuses on the present moment, helping people become more aware of their emotions, thoughts, and perceptions. This focus encourages self-awareness and therapeutic change, helping individuals become more attuned to their own needs and emotions and improving interactions with others.

Beliefs

The therapist helps identify limiting beliefs that may keep you trapped in unhelpful patterns. You will gain insight into alternative possibilities, often more creative and better suited to your needs. This understanding empowers you to adapt to a constantly changing world, take on more responsibility, and adopt new ways of being and acting.

What happens in the sessions?

In our first session, I will introduce myself and ask you to tell me about your life today and what has led you to seek therapy. This is also a chance for me to explain Gestalt therapy, the guidelines we’ll follow to ensure a smooth process, and the frequency of sessions (weekly sessions are usually ideal to begin with, if possible).

In each session, you will bring whatever is on your mind—whatever is currently troubling you—and we’ll use that as the starting point for our work. As we continue, I’ll start to notice certain themes that may emerge and explore how they connect to other areas of your life. Gradually, we’ll work through unresolved issues and address unmet needs.

We’ll also look at how certain behaviours or ways of responding, perhaps unconsciously, might be influencing the challenges you’re facing in life. Together, we’ll explore these patterns and work on making adjustments, helping you feel more at ease with yourself and your surroundings.

Who is Gestalt therapy for ?

Gestalt therapy is particularly helpful for strengthening self-confidence and becoming more aware of your internal resources. It aids in releasing unresolved issues from the past and opens up new perspectives. It also helps individuals navigate daily challenges and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their environment.

Gestalt therapy is beneficial for:

  • Emotional issues: anxiety, depression, stress

  • Relational difficulties: family conflicts, work tensions, communication issues, relationship challenges

  • Personal development: low self-confidence, existential questions, desire for change

Gestalt therapy provides a safe and supportive environment for those seeking to gain insight into their internal patterns, transform their relationships, and realise their potential.
